Government Takes Swift Action in Alleviating El Niño Impact on Kitui CountyIn a proactive response to the adverse effects of El Niño in Kitui County, the Cabinet Secretary for East African Community (EAC), Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL), and Regional Development, Hon. Penina Malonza, took a hands-on approach by personally overseeing the distribution of relief aid to affected families in Kitui Rural Constituency.

The relief effort, aimed at families in Katothya, Kwavonza, Kiusyani, Kwa Kilui, Yatta-Kwavonza, Kalulini, Kanyangi, Kanyongonyo, and Kiseuni, comes as a lifeline to those who have suffered crop losses and significant disruptions to their lives due to the impact of El Niño.

The distribution includes not only essential food items but also non-food items to support the affected residents in rebuilding their lives.Hon. Penina Malonza, along with her team, actively engaged with the local community, ensuring that the government’s assistance reaches those who need it the most.

The commitment to not just addressing immediate needs but also providing essential non-food items underscores the comprehensive approach taken by the government to help affected residents piece their lives back together.As part of her visit, the Cabinet Secretary inspected the ongoing tarmacking of the Kwavonza-Kiusyani road, a critical infrastructure project undertaken by the National Government.

This dual effort, both in disaster response and infrastructure development, showcases the government’s dedication to not only providing immediate relief but also fostering long-term resilience in the region.

Accompanying Hon. Malonza were notable figures including Hon. Jane Chebaibai, Chairperson of the Bomas of Kenya, Hon. Halima Mucheke, Chairperson of the Trans Nzoia Rural Authority (TRA), Mr. Dave Calo, Director of the Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA), Hon. Charles Nyamai, and various local leaders.
