The National Liberal Party (NLP) has issued a fiery statement condemning any attempts by political parties to hijack the recruitment of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson and commissioners.
In a bold declaration, NLP Party Leader Dr. Augustus Kyalo Muli warned that allowing political kingpins to dictate the appointment of electoral officials would compromise Kenya’s democracy.
“The IEBC is not a political asset to be shared among a few leaders, but a crucial institution that must remain independent and beyond political manipulation,” he said.
Dr. Muli slammed proposals for consultations between UDA, ODM, and Wiper leaders, arguing that the process must remain professional, transparent, and guided strictly by law. He likened the move to a “betrayal of democratic ideals” and a dangerous step toward installing a partisan electoral body.
Citing the chaotic 2022 elections, NLP warned against a repeat of the same mistakes, emphasizing that electoral integrity cannot be determined in backroom negotiations. Instead, the party called for a rigorous, merit-based selection process that reflects Kenya’s diversity and upholds fairness.
“We cannot allow another election to be stolen through boardroom deals. The selection panel must ensure that only the most competent, independent, and integrity-driven individuals are appointed,” Dr. Muli asserted.
The NLP further demanded fair representation for youth and persons with disabilities in the new IEBC lineup, underscoring the need for inclusivity in the commission.
As the recruitment process unfolds, the party has vowed to remain vigilant, ensuring that Kenya’s electoral body remains a trusted pillar of democracy.
With tensions rising over the IEBC appointments, will the government heed the call for transparency, or is Kenya heading for another politically compromised election? Only time will tell.
