Farm Extension Visit Enhances Crop Management Practices in Mumoni Ward

A targeted farm visit was carried out on April 9th, 2025, to the farm of Mr. Mandela Syanda in Mumoni Ward, focusing on improving crop management practices for maize and tomato production. The visit, conducted by agricultural extension officers, aimed to provide technical support and practical solutions to boost productivity and crop health.

Mr. Syanda is currently managing a 3-acre irrigated maize field located along the Katse River, which was planted on February 28th, 2025. During the visit, key emphasis was placed on pest and disease management, which is vital at the current crop development stage to safeguard the maize against yield-threatening challenges.

The inspection also covered Mr. Syanda’s tomato farm, where several critical areas were addressed. Extension officers provided guidance on effective pest and disease control measures, discussed proper staking techniques to improve plant support and airflow, and emphasized appropriate plant spacing to minimize nutrient competition and disease spread.

The visit is part of ongoing efforts by agricultural officers in Kitui County to support local farmers with expert advice and practical training to improve food security and agricultural livelihoods.

Mr. Syanda expressed appreciation for the timely visit, noting that the insights gained will contribute significantly to improving his farming practices.
